Sultnapuri: More than 300 Muslim couples in Uttar Pradesh are caught in the cross fire between two maulvis.

The couples from Sultnapuri have to perform their nikah all over again after the head of the Sunni community of Bareily Darul Ilfa issued a fatwa against them for taking part in a funeral procession, headed by a Sufi maulvi.

The Sunni leader took offence to the fact that Sufi Maulvi Abdul Hakim Khan carried out the ceremony for Sunnis.

Ilfa called the procession unislamic and issued a fatwa to annul the wedding of all those who attended the funeral.

“A few days back, Abdul Khan read Namaz at a funeral. When I returned, people asked me what should be done. I told them since they knowingly accepted him as the Imam, they would have to repent and perform rituals again,” said a petitioner Mualana Mahmood Alam.
