The Bangalore Urban District Congress Committee felicitated Congress leaders K Rahman Khan and Saleem Ahmed at a programme in the city on Wednesday.
Rahman Khan was recently elected as a Rajya Sabha member for the fourth consecutive time while Saleem Ahmed has been appointed as the Director General of Nehru Yuka Kendra.
Speaking at the programme, Union External Affairs Minister S M Krishna said, “Congress recognises the Muslims and values them. There are notions that youths are becoming directionless and therefore, the party appointed a dynamic person like Saleem Ahmed as the Director General of Nehru Yuva Kendra. Congress will not resort to cheap gimmicks like posters and banners of some conventions. Its facts will speak for themselves.”
“Our party has done enough for Muslims. When I was the Deputy Chief Minister in the Veerappa Moily Government, I had made a provision four per cent reservation for Muslims. There is no need for us to blow our own trumpets about the measure we have taken for the upliftment of Muslims,” he remarked.
Krishna said that people’s memory is very short and one has to remind them of the party’s plans, their achievements and commitments towards the minorities.
Referring to a convention of Muslims organised by JD(S) recently, Rahman Khan said, “JD(S) went ahead and joined with the communal forces and it took four years for them to realise their mistake. But Congress did not take time to seek forgiveness after the defeat of Iqbal Ahmed Sardargi in the MLC elections.”
Rahman Khan said, “Zameer (MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan) is an attention seeking person and he remains a tiger only in newspapers. I challenge him to come out and list out the policy and programmes he has taken up for the welfare of the Muslims. Only Congress can come out with effective programmes for the development of the minority communities.”
Thanking the party for giving him a responsible position, Saleem Ahmed said ,”I would concentrate on skill development of youths, Panchayats, sports, health missions. We will organise camps seminars in schools and colleges.”
