Taking exception to waving of the tricolour by AAP supporters during the sit-in protest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a Congress leader on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission alleging the act amounted to insulting the national flag.

Kishore Varshney, a member of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, threatened to move the court if steps were not taken to prevent such acts. "In a number of programmes of Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP, there have been instances of waving of the tricolour. This was witnessed even during the sit-in outside the Rail Bhavan in the national capital on January 20-21. "This is tantamount to insulting the national flag," Varshney said in a statement faxed to Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath.

"It is, therefore, requested that the matter be taken cognisance of by the Election Commission and the ruling party in Delhi be restrained from repeating such acts. "If they persist, the party itself be de-recognized," said the statement, a copy of which was made available to the media.

"However, if no effective action is taken against the repeated acts of insult to the national flag, I will be impelled to lodge a Public Interest Litigation in a court of law," the Congress leader said.
