THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM politburo member and chairman of the presidium at the CPM state conference Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that the delegates at the conference had expressed concern over the wealthy class highjacking the power centres at the local level.Briefing the proceedings of the conference here on Wednesday, he said that delegates participating in the discussion pointed out that replacing the landlords of yesteryears, a new class of wealthy people had emerged all over the state and they have begun dictating terms at the power centres like local self-government institutions and police stations. They are able to bypass genuine political party activists, using their financial clout and often with the support of caste and religious organisations. Concern Over Party’s Slow Growth The delegates expressed disappointment at the slow growth of the party at the national level The party had not been able to launch strong agitations raising the issues of unemployment, price rise and corruption. However, the delegates expressed satisfaction at the party decision to withdraw support to the UPA Government following the latter signing the nuclear agreement with the US. The delegates wanted to take along all those with Left leanings to strengthen Left unity.
