PUDUCHERRY: The government proposed to institute a comprehensive enquiry into the disproportionate engagement of workers in government departments and organisations made during the tenure of the previous government.Chief Minister N Rangasamy said on Monday that engagement of workers should be as per requirement and sustainability. Only then can a government sustain itself financially. A cabinet decision would be taken following which all aspects of the recruitment including senior bureaucrats who had okayed the recruitments would be enquired, he said.He refuted allegations of vengeance by his government and said that based on the High Court order, the scheme evolved for such recruitment and the financial inability to pay salary has led to the retrenchment of workers. The government was unable to sustain voluminous engagement of workers, which was not in proportion to requirement. In PASIC the decision to disengage workers was taken on such grounds on April 30, 2011, before his government assumed power. The Agro corporation was reeling under Rs 23 crores loan and was unable to provide fertilizers and pesticides to farmers. The Puducherry Cooperative Milk Corporation (PONLAIT) also suffered a loss of Rs 12 crores as milk production has gone down to 25,000-30,000 litres, from 70,000.In such circumstances the temporary staff has become a burden to the organisation. He said because he went out of power, the problems have arisen. However, he assured that action was being taken to supply fertilizers and pesticides to farmers. The enhanced rice scheme through PDS would be distributed to red card holders from July 1. Very poor BPL families would get 35 kg of rice , while BPL families would get 25 kg of rice per month. The distribution of wheat for APL cards through PDS will continue at Re 1 per kg.
