BANGALORE: Its that time of the year when the entire country goes into a ‘festive’ mood with Ayudha Pooja and Deepavali. But the Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike (BBMP) has other concerns during these celebrations and festivities as the three days of pooja considerably adds to the waste generated in the city. The Palike has issued an advisory to the public to ensure that they do not forget their responsibilities and be more sensitive in their actions as citizens during their celebrations. The BBMP commissioner Siddaiah has reminded the city dwellers to keep their surroundings clean during these months.Last year such items that were thrown into the garbage had lead to many drains being clogged during rains and resulted in floods in many areas of the city. The problems did not end here as large number of cattle were also seen on roads eating wet garbage and posing as a hurdle and danger to traffic and pedestrian movement.Siddaiah has strongly advised against any sale of pooja, decorative materials, flowers, food and confectioneries on pedestrians accesses which would hinder movement of the public.Directing such vendors to dispose the remains of such materials properly, he has also asked people not to throw garbage remains and dig roads illegally to erect pendals and shamiyanas for functions and other public gatherings as it would damage public property and hinder traffic movement. He has asked the people to accumulate the garbage in a hygienic manner and give it to garbage collectors for disposal. It is not uncommon for politicians and local organisations to erect banners, cut outs and posters displaying congratulatory messages and festival wishes.Siddaiah has requested the people not to indulge in these practices as well.In his advisory, the commissioner has asked people not just to dispose garbage in a proper way but also to ensure that they take care in not giving out water outlets into the roads after their vehicles have been washed for the pooja. The commissioner has sought the cooperation of the Bangaloreans in the matter as the their actions would affect the environment and the beauty of the city they live in.
