Cockpit voice recorder, not black box, found
Investigators are zeroing in on the black box which is critical in patching together what went wrong on May 22.

Mangalore: Even 48 hours after the Mangalore crash, investigators have zeroed in on the area where the black box is. The box is critical in patching together what went wrong on the morning of May 22.

Investigators from the DGCA and the local administration have however, found the cockpit voice recorder on Sunday evening. The CVR records conversation between pilots and the Air Traffic Control.

The digital data flight recorder or the black box is yet to be recovered. The Black Box or the Flight Data Recorder is a device that records specific aircraft performance parameters.

The data recorded by the black box is used for accident investigation, as well as for analysing air safety issues, material degradation and engine performance. It is designed to withstand the force of a high speed impact and intense heat.

The exterior of the device is coated in heat-resistant bright orange paint for high visibility in wreckage and is mounted in plane's tail section where it's most likely to survive a severe crash.
