BANGALORE: Come 2015, the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) will buy 5 million metric tonnes of coal annually for 10 years. In an invitation for expression of interest (EOI) released on  November 17, the company has invited applications from reputed international suppliers owning and operating a thermal coal mine abroad or importers or exporters of coal to India with a volume of at least 2MTPA each year for 3 years. The last date for submission of EOIs is 5 pm on  January 18, 2012. “We  will then shortlist the selected candidates and float the tender process through international competitive bidding,” said G A Purushottam of KPCL. KPCL is looking to buy coal with a Gross Calorific Value between 5800-6300 kCal/kg with moisture content up to 20% and ash content up to 14% with sulphur values lesser than 0.8%. This will be the biggest tender for coal by KPCL according to the corporation. The process is expected to take 12 to 14 months to implement.
