KOCHI: To prevent the outbreak of various contagious diseases in the city, the corporation has decided to conduct a major cleanliness drive to ensure hygiene. The decision was taken at a high-profile meeting of corporation health officials held here on Thursday. The drive will be conducted for a fortnight, beginning Friday. It will include daily raids on all restaurants and wayside eateries in the city to ensure that they maintain the required standards of hygiene. “In all, 22 health inspectors have been assigned the task of checking all the wayside eateries and they will file daily reports regarding each raid. If any restaurant or food stall is found to be operating below the specified hygiene standards, it will be shut down with immediate effect,” said T K Ashraf, chairman, Health Standing Committee, Kochi Corporation. Two squads, one from Mattanchery and another from Ernakulam will inspect all the restaurants, added Ashraf.“September 7 and October 4 will be observed as ‘Dry Days’ to ensure hygiene in each and every house. Apart from it, super-chlorination of public wells will be done. There are also plans to spray bleaching powder in the high-risk areas," he added.
