A class 9 student was killed after being struck by a JCB excavator in South Kolkata’s Bansdroni area on Wednesday. The driver allegedly fled the scene, and police are working to locate him.
The incident occurred while the boy was on his way to tuition classes. Locals rushed him to Bangur Hospital in Tollygunge, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In response to the tragedy, residents protested, alleging that the poor condition of the road—long overdue for repairs—contributed to the accident. They also criticised the police for their delayed response.
Some protesters vandalised the excavator involved in the incident and confronted a senior police officer, demanding the presence of the local councillor and MLA. They called the boy’s death a “state-sponsored murder,” citing the deteriorating road conditions in the area.
Some residents also alleged that TMC members assaulted protesters, and a police officer reportedly pushed a woman, causing her to fall unconscious.
Condemning the incident, BJP leader Roopa Ganguly said that she would remain at Bansdroni police station until the driver responsible for the child’s death was arrested.
She alleged that “Trinamool Congress (TMC) members in plain clothes came to rescue the officer in charge of the station who was surrounded by locals.” Ganguly questioned, “Why are those who caused the boy’s death not arrested, while our BJP leaders are detained?”
A senior police officer also confirmed that the boy was struck by the excavator and that the driver remains at large. “We will investigate the matter and the circumstances surrounding the protests,” the official stated.
