New Delhi:The Beijing Olympic will end on August 24, 2008, and Olympic 2008 will witness a new champion emerging. After 10 days of the tournament, host China has surged way past the unbeaten champs and their close competitors; they surpassed the United States.
China won 39 gold medals as opposed to America's 22 gold’s at the end of August 18. At the previous games at Athens in 2004 US had scored 35 gold’s with China not far behind with 32 gold’s.
In 2000 as well US was the clear winner with 40 gold’s and 24 silver medals in their kitty. China came third with 28 gold medals and the Russian federation was at second position grabbing 32.
In China, Michael Phelps won most of the gold’s for the US, eight in total. This has been the greatest ever but that wasn't enough for the US to defend their title.
The new winner China got most of their medals, seven of them, in the weightlifting category followed by shooting and Gymnastics where they got four gold’s each.
