THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala will stage a fast in front of the Martyrs Column here on Thursday, as part of a statewide UDF campaign for a permanent solution to the Mullaperiyar dam issue.The fast will be from 9 am to 5 pm. Coinciding with it, prominent UDF leaders will lead the fast in all the other districts on the same day.An emergency session of the UDF liaison committee, which met here on Tuesday, called for peaceful measures to achieve the goal of Kerala for a new dam in Mullaperiyar and lowering the water level in the existing dam to 120 feet as a prelude to it. Ramesh welcomed the reported statement of Janata Party leader Subramaniam Swamy that the stance of Kerala for raising a new dam at its own cost while ensuring that due release of waters to Tamil Nadu, was just and hence Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa should write to her Kerala counterpart.Subramaniam Swamy had also opined that the fears of the people in Kerala owing to the recurring tremors in the Mullperiyar region have to be addressed.
