New Delhi: Central intelligence agencies have alerted the Tamil Nadu government about a possible terror strike in Chennai prompting authorities on Monday to beef up security in markets and crowded places.
The Central Government advisory about a possible terror attack was issued to the Tamil Nadu DGP, Chennai City Police Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran said. The intelligence inputs were based on several telephone intercepts over a period of time.
According to sources, Central intelligence agencies have found out that three to four Harkat-ul-Jihad-e-Islami (HuJI) activists are holed up in Chennai waiting for orders to carry out a strike in the busy and crowded areas of the city.
Chennai City Police Commissioner, however, said the police did not have any specific information about an operation of the Bangladesh-based HuJI, hiding in Chennai.
In Delhi, Government sources said all states, including Tamil Nadu, have been alerted about a possible strike in crowded areas of major cities, following the recent terrorist attacks in Hyderabad.
Kumaran also said a general alert had come from the Intelligence Bureau (IB) not only to Chennai but to all the states about "certain designs by certain terrorist elements trying to do some kind of an action.”
And as a precautionary measure, two southern cities — Hyderabad and Bangalore —Mumbai and Kerala have been put on high alert. Special intelligence teams may also be sent to these places to avert any eventuality.
Meanwhile, Kumaran said that the alert was not specific to Chennai. "However, all lodges, market places and other crowded areas are being provided with additional security," he said.
Following the twin bomb blasts in Hyderabad on August 25, police had beefed up security in all important installations where crowds converge.
