THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan has charged that the Oommen Chandy government with violation of norms by allocating cabinet rank to 22 ministers including for the chief whip and the latest induction, when the permissible level is only 15 per cent of the total strength of MLAs in the Assembly. This has happened for the first time in the history of Kerala, he said, adding that the state exchequer is also being looted on this score. The UDF Government has lost its political character and it has stooped into a mere co-ordination mechanism of community and communal organisations. ‘’The expansion of the UDF ministry and reshuffle of portfolios would destroy the base of the UDF and Congress,’’he said. He also said while when the KPCC executive itself has taken a stand that allotting a fifth ministerial berth to the IUML would create imbalance in the communal equations in the cabinet, the Chief Minister has resorted to the exercise with a narrow objective of appeasing religious and communal outfits. Otherwise, the government should have been able to convince at least minister Aryadan Mohammed, V M Sudheeran and K Muraleedharan, he opined. By allowing IUML an additional ministerial berth, Oommen Chandy has squarely surrendered to the IUML. What is being done by the government now is to convert the state into a confrontation ground for various communal and casteist forces, he alleged.
