New Delhi: It was a rather tragic end to what could have been a promising beginning. A budding table tennis player - who dreamt of representing India one day - died on Monday morning after he was allegedly beaten up by his father.
Fourteen-year-old Biswajit Bhattacharya collapsed during a practice session on the terrace of his south Kolkata home, and was rushed to a nearly hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The shocking death immediately led to neighbours and relatives thronging his residence, alleging that the boy died after the demanding father, Deepak Bhattacharya, beat him as he wasn’t satisfied with the son’s performance.
Terming the death as "unnatural", Superintendent of police (South 24 Pargana), S N Gupta, was quoted by PTI as saying that the father had been detained for interrogation and the boy’s body was sent for post-mortem.
The budding star’s sister too alleged that the father was not happy with the boy's recent performance after he lost in a tournament.
According to the girl, the father hit him on the head during the practice, following which the boy collapsed.
Biswajit had earlier played in a number of state-level tournaments.
