CHENNAI: On July 4, Sparky’s diner celebrated the American Independence Day — the day when the United States of America declared independence from British rule. But, you don’t have to be from the States to enjoy some great American music, food and atmosphere at a quirky American restaurant right here, in Chennai. The holiday menu featured a buffet of typical Fourth of July — mouthwatering fresh watermelon, sweet baked beans, corn on the cob, and barbecue, along with chili and corn bread and finally, hot off the grill hot dogs, burgers, sloppy joes and chicken strips.Oh, and let’s not forget the banana splits for dessert! An unusual amount of planning went into the menu, decorations and organising the event, and it was a collaborative effort among the staff at Sparky’s and the chef, Thom Petty, to craft a delectable menu of classic American food.“For one, I have to look at the price,” said Petty. “I have a `395 buffet, what can I do? I looked at the theme of it and said ‘Okay, what’s Americana?’ So we kind of just go from there.” The staff at the restaurant felt that it was a successful event, and they even took part in the celebration.Ann Holfinger, manager at Sparky’s was proud when he said, “Whether they’re friends or strangers, people want to be here for an American event. It’s good to see everyone enjoying themselves with friends.” Eric Gossard, an American working in the city, was not used to the fact that the Fourth of July wasn’t being celebrated in the city, “It’s like it wasn’t a holiday, but in here (Sparky’s), it feels like a holiday.” Although he wasn’t celebrating in his usual way with a baseball game and cold beers, he was very fond of the hamburgers and he enjoyed spending time with his friends at the restaurant. The jovial mood continued late into the evening and was accompanied by American music and mirth. Although there were few fireworks to celebrate the day, it seemed all one needs is great food and friends to appreciate a classic American holiday.
