In an attempt to stall the plunging profits of coconut farmers and to provide farmers with a diversified market beyond the age-old copra and coconut oil, the Coconut Development Board (CDB) has proposed the formation of 10 Coconut Producers’ Companies by the end of the current fiscal year. The company will essentially consist of several hundreds of coconut farmers grouped into smaller units called Coconut Producers’ Society (CPS) and Coconut Producers’ Federation (CPF). There are over 1,400 such CPS units in various parts of the state. Each of these units consists of about 40 to 100 coconut growers of a contiguous area with a combined strength of about 4,000 coconut palms between them. These small CPS units of a particular area combine to form block-level units called CPF. The Coconut Producers’ Company will in turn consist of several federations of a particular district or adjoining districts. The company is mainly aimed at consolidating the produce of the small-scale coconut farmers and helping them in combined large-scale ventures in order to produce value-added  coconut produce like Coconut milk powder, coconut cream, coconut vinegar, desiccated coconut and so on which have high export value and constant demand throughout the year unlike copra or coconut oil.“We will soon start the registration of the Coconut Producers Society. There are already 10 CPFs. But to form a company we need federations from adjoining areas, at least within the same district. Once these registrations are done, we will start the companies.  The first producers’ company will most likely be in North Kerala since there is a larger concentration of coconut growers here,” A S Sebastian said, the official in-charge of Coconut Producers Society in the CDB.He said the board has also been looking at providing a forum for the CPS in the upcoming three coconut bio-parks which have been proposed in the State Budget. In these bio-parks the producers’ companies will be able to access essential infrastructure and technology for production. This is apart from being a forum of interaction with manufacturers.first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
