THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: People all over Kerala must raise their voice to close the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant in order to save the people from pollution, said educationist N A Kareem while inaugurating a convention organised by Kerala Samsthana Janakeeya Prathirodha Samithi. He demanded immediate closure of the plant and urged the State Government to introduce alternative measures on a war footing. The problem prevailing in Vilappilsala will soon turn out to be a major problem for the entire city in the near future if the issue continues to be ignored, he said. The State Government also has a major role like the City Corporation in taking action to resolve the issue. Kareem urged the people to force the authorities to shut down the Vilappilsala garbage treatment plant in the same manner Endosulfan and the Coca Cola factories were forced to down their shutters. People in Thiruvananthapuram city will cooperate with the residents of Vilappilsala to end the hardships they have endured for more than 11 years, said sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman, who presided over the function. Vilappilsala is not an isolated issue in Kerala, and it should act as a catalyst to link similar and ongoing agitations all over the state, said veteran journalist B R P Bhaskar. Vilappilsala Solidarity Council was formed at the function with the appointment of N A Kareem as patron. Kanayi Kunhiraman was appointed chairman and C S Chandrika, M Shajahan, T Peter, Vellanadu Ramachandran, Devaprasad John as vice-presidents. R Biju is the convener of the committee. Vilappilsala Janakeeya Samithi president Burhan, Solidarity district president Amir Kandal, SUCI (C) district secretary G S Padmakumar, Janakeeya Pratirodha Samithi district secretary M Shajahan and Swathantra Mathsya Thozhilali Federation president T Peter also spoke on the occasion.
