THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state budget has announced a slew of programmes to reduce the alarming increase in the accident rate. Finance Minister K M Mani said that the Road Safety Authority would implement a comprehensive project in this regard. Accident review committees would be set up at district-levels to analyse and submit suggestions to bring down the accident rate. Driver testing tracks would be built in three more cities. The radar surveillance system which is being implemented in five districts at present would be extended to all districts by next year.A research centre on training in driving would be set up at Edappal in Malappuram. Computerised fitness certification for vehicles would be implemented in Thriuvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. The Sree Chithira Thirunal College of Engineering here would begin a PG course in road safety. A rejuvenation package and Rs 125 crore aid have brought cheers to the KSRTC. Computerisation, modernisation of operations in workshops and phased implementation of global positioning in buses are some other projects announced for the corporation. Town/ city services on the lines of the Thiru-Kochi service in Kochi would be extended to all district headquarters.A total of 100 services will be started in Thirssur, Kozhikode and Kottayam towns. Steps would be taken to build shopping complexes at eight KSRTC bus stations.
