The student of a private engineering college in Orissa died after allegedly eating hostel food.

Bhubaneswar: The student of a private engineering college here died after allegedly eating hostel food following which police arrested three college officials on Friday.

The death of the student triggered angry protests from his colleagues who clashed with the kitchen staff and indulged in ransacking. Around 100 police personnel have been deployed in the campus to prevent any further violence.

Police said Shamsuddin Shah, a BTech third-year student of electronics and telecommunications died due to suspected food poisoning late on Thursday night after taking dinner in the college hostel in info city locality.

Angry over the incident a large number of students many of whom had also complained of stomach pain and uneasiness after eating dinner confronted the kitchen staff.

The situation turned worse when some kitchen staff allegedly misbehaved with the students who in turn indulged in violence and ransacking. The situation was later brought under control and about 100 police personnel were deployed in and around the college campus to prevent any further flare up deputy commissioner of police Himanshu Lal said.

Three officials of the college including two directors were today arrested in connection with the incident he said adding some others were also being questioned.

Police is also looking into the circumstances that led to death of the student who hailed from Jajpur district of the state.
