The Border Security Force (BSF) deployed at the Indo-Bangladesh border has identified districts most vulnerable due to the ongoing situation in Bangladesh. These districts might experience attempts by groups to cross into the Indian side. Intelligence inputs have also been provided to the force regarding areas that could be used by Bangladeshi nationals to enter India illegally.
Many of the vulnerable areas are in West Bengal, as it shares the largest border area, followed by Meghalaya and Tripura.
Intelligence reports have suggested that fearing attacks, large groups of Hindus have moved towards the border and may attempt to enter India.
A senior BSF official has stated that officers have been instructed to connect with locals residing in adjacent border areas and alert them. Troops have been advised to maintain contact with local village leaders.
“We are sending our officials to a few villages near the border. We have instructed them to report if anyone tries to enter India illegally. Local leaders have been asked to alert officials so that the Force can take swift action,” a senior BSF official told News18.
The BSF South Bengal organised village coordination meetings at the Border Outpost Icchamati and Gede to inform residents about the situation in Bangladesh and other border issues. These meetings, attended by prominent locals, Sarpanch, and Pradhan, aimed to create a sense of security. Similar meetings have been held in Mamabhagina and Sutia.
According to another official, intelligence inputs indicate that the period around August 15, coinciding with a Hindu festival, could be critical. The inputs also suggest that cattle smuggling might increase as miscreants could exploit the situation, assuming the Force is occupied with other security concerns.
On Wednesday, the BSF foiled an attempt in Malda district, West Bengal. A female BSF staff member saved buffaloes by firing at smugglers. Similarly, on Thursday, the BSF Tripura, in a joint operation with local police, apprehended 11 Bangladeshi nationals, including a woman, in West Tripura and seized items worth Rs 72 lakh.
