London: French first lady Carla Bruni's “highly intimate” photographs and videos with an ex-lover Rapha'l Enthoven have been stolen in a burglary in Paris.
Thieves broke into the flat of actor Julien Enthoven, who is believed to have the custody of the pictures.
Rapha'l had given the photographs to his actor brother as he did not want to embarrass his new partner as well as French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a detective working on the case told Daily Mail.
Police fear that the photographs could now be made public, overshadowing Sarkozy's official trip to Spain.
The photographs and videos were taken during Bruni's affair with philosopher Rapha'l Enthoven, who is also the father of her eight-year-old son, Aur'lien.
“The thieves appeared to know exactly what they were looking for taking highly intimate prints, a camera full of further images, videos, and numerous computer files,” a source told the newspaper.
“They broke into Enthoven's flat in Rue Dauphine on Sunday night, smashing a window in the sitting room which looks out on to the courtyard. Nobody was at home at the time, and nothing else was taken,” the source added.
Police now fear that thieves could sell the pictures for hundreds of thousands of pounds or post it online so as to cause maximum embarrassment to the French President.
“We are doing everything we can to retrieve the images, and would ask anyone with any information about them to come forward immediately,” the detective added.
Police confirmed that both Sarkozy and Bruni had been informed of the theft during their trip to Spain.
The timing of the burglary, on the eve of the official visit of Sarkozy, seems to be a cause of deep concern.
In March 2008, an auction house had released a nude picture of Bruni in her modelling days just hours before the couple set off for England to meet the Queen.
