'Bigg Boss 7' review: Why the opening night was such a letdown
The quintessential host Salman Khan is back with his antics and so is a bundle of dull and boring contestants.

New Delhi: Television's biggest reality show, which has given the Indian audiences fodder for enough gossip and voyeurism in the last six years, is back on the small screen. The quintessential host Salman Khan is back with his antics and so is a bundle of dull and boring contestants.

After so much brouhaha over the anonymity of the contestants till the last minute of the opening night, what we get to see are the faces that have been quite unnerving in their usual daily soap operas. And, if the television actors were not enough to put you off with their usual over the top drama, a few forgotten names from Bollywood also make their way to the new season of 'Bigg Boss'.

Being Kajol's sister does get you some brownie points on the show. Unlike other contestants, Tanisha who is the first to enter the house gets the task to decide the fate of the other inmates by sending them to 'jannat' or 'jahanum' along with VJ Andy. From reasons as lame as 'you are my friend' to 'I am touched by your hardwork', the contestants are sent to two different parts of the house.

Even the contestants didn't leave any stone unturned to go over the top with their theatrics. Ratan Rajput, who was last seen doing a swayamwar on national television, seems to still not have got over the hangover of her popular daily soap, which is off air now. From her costume to her language, it seems Ratan mistook 'Bigg Boss 7' for 'Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo'. If she was not enough, another television actress Kamya Punjabi added to the misery by constantly calling the host 'Khan saab'. And, what made Shilpa Agnihotri cry still remains a mystery to many.

While all the contestants tried to make an impression with their grand entries but none could leave the audiences impressed. In fact, it seems that host Salman Khan was just not interested to share the limelight with anyone for long. Akshay Kumar, who came to 'Bigg Boss' to promote his upcoming film 'Boss' briefly left after singing a song, while Kapil Sharma and Ali Asgar from 'Comedy Nights with Kapil' didn't get much time to tickle the funny bones. Moreover, the act by Gutthi aka Sunil Grover, who got much appreciation after his stint on 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' finale, was axed from the final edit.

Riding high on the theme of 'jannat' and 'jahanum', the twists and turns begin from day one on the show. From the dramatic entry of two contestants in a coffin to no toilet paper in 'jahanum' house, the new season seems too scripted than ever.

Just like Salman prays at the beginning of the show that he be able to survive the new season, we also pray to God to give us enough patience to survive the new season of 'Bigg Boss'.
