CHENNAI: Several groups of tourists from Tamil Nadu have cancelled their trips to various destinations in Kerala during the past few days, following reports of tension over the Mullaiperiyar issue.About 20 per cent of the tourists have called off their trips, according to Christie Rajan, IATA Agents Forum, Tamil Nadu Chapter. Those who cancelled their visits had expressed apprehension over travelling in Tamil Nadu registered vehicles by road, he told Express.Kerala is among the top tourist destinations for vacationers from Tamil Nadu who visit hill stations, beach resorts and backwaters in places like Munnar, Wayanad, Alleppey and Kumarakom during the December season.A tour operator in Chennai said many families had called of their visits or changed their destinations to Bangalore and Mysore. Prasad, Manager (Operations), Bharat Travels, Chennai, however said tourists had nothing to fear, as the company always took measures to ensure the safety of their clients travelling to Kerala. “We use only Kerala registration cars in that State,” he said.Anil V S, Tourist Officer at Kerala government’s Department of Tourism in Chennai, also assured that Tamil tourists were safe in Kerala. “We have not received any reports of trouble for visitors,” he insisted.
