BANGALORE: Heavy rains lashed Bangalore on Friday afternoon, catching residents unaware. Incessant rain that began at around 3 pm receded only by late evening.With roads waterlogged, traffic was affected in some places. The city received 24.4 mm rain till 8.30 pm on Friday and a few spells of rain or thunder showers are likely to occur in some areas on Saturday.Friday afternoon unfolded a splashing surprise for the city. Heavy
rains lashed the city which caught the city dwellers off guard due to
the sudden change in weather. Continuous downpour began at
around 3 pm until the late evening hours.Roads were flooded near JC
Road, Minerva Circle, Raj Bhavan Road and surrounding areas, creating
panic among commuters. Dastakar Nature Bazaar, the crafts fair
that began on Friday in the city at the Palace Grounds, saw alot of
disappointed craftsmen who had come from across the country. The
downpour damaged some of their goods due to water seeping into the
stalls. Visitors were left stranded in the venue, without having
options to escape the heavy showers.Deepika, a visitor said, "Everyday
I have been carrying my umbrella, but I forgot to bring it today. The
weather was sunny when I left home, this was completely unexpected."Other
than a medium-sized tree that was uprooted at Temple Street, Nagendra
block, where the branches collasped on electrical wires that led to
short circuit in three houses in the area, there was no other damage
reported to the BBMP control room.The rainfall measured 24.4 mm
upto 8.30 pm on Friday, few spells of rain or thunder showers are likely
to occur in some areas on Saturday.One killed in MadikeriOne person was killed in a wall collapse in Madikeri and several houses in Belgaum district caved in as heavy rains lashed the state on Thursday. While schools and colleges were ordered closed in Kodagu district, many reservoirs in the state were reaching the brim, forcing authorities to issue alerts to people living downstream.Pradeep (19), a college student, was killed when a parapet wall collapsed on him as he was asleep in his house in Madikeri in the wee hours of Friday.In Belgaum district, following heavy rain in south Maharashtra, 10 bridges were closed for traffic. Water is said to be flowing over the bridges at several places in the district. Though rains had receded in the district, water levels in Markandeya and Krishna rivers were rising rapidly due to rains in south Maharashtra.Maharashtra released 1.10 lakh cusecs of water, including 63,257 cusecs from Rajapur and 31,386 cusecs from Rajaram barrages and 2,111 cusecs from Koyna reservoir on Thursday following heavy rain.Heavy rain in Belgaum district also left the Hidkal reservoir filled to its brim, forcing authorities to release water.Similarly, heavy rain in Shimoga district saw inflow into the Linganamakki, Tunga and Bharda reservoirs rise sharply.Elsewhere in the state, following rains in the catchment areas, water level in the Hemavathy reservoir went up forcing officials to issue a warning to people living in low lying areas.
