Army Releases Video, Claims no Proof of Molestation in Handwara
Police probe indicate that no such incident had taken place and it was an attempt by some miscreants to create disturbance within Handwara town.

While protests are raging on in Handwara following allegations that a security personnel molested a school girl in the town, Indian Army dismissed the charge. Releasing a video to back its claim, an Army officer said that there was no molestation charge against any soldier. He also asserted that the allegations were made with an aim to malign Army’s image.

"The video that we have released shows that there was no molestation. It has been done to spoil the image of Army. We have ordered a probe into the incident and if anybody is found guilty, they will have to face severe action," Army PRO Lieutenant Colonel NN Joshi said.

Police investigations too indicate that no such incident had taken place and it was an attempt by some miscreants to create disturbance for removing an army bunker located within Handwara town, sources said.

Meanwhile, the J&K Police suspended an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) for opening fire on the mob in Handwara. Four people have died due to widespread clashes between security forces and residents in Handwara following protests against the molestation of a school girl allegedly by a security official.

J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti spoke to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar who assured her of a probe. Mehbooba, who is on her maiden visit to the national capital after assuming the post of CM, said the incident was "very unfortunate".

"I spoke to Defence Minister. He assured me that a probe will be initiated and the culprits will be punished. At the same time the family will be compensated. Such incidents should not happen in the future," she said after meeting Parrikar.

There is complete shutdown in Kashmir Valley to protest against the killings. All shops and business establishment are closed and public transport is also off the roads.

Fearing trouble the Jammu and Kashmir government has imposed restrictions around six police stations in Srinagar city. Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel have been deployed at vital places in Srinagar to stop any untoward incident.
