Amid the ongoing outrage over the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case, a 65-year-old woman was allegedly raped on the premises of a government hospital in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district, police informed on Thursday. The accused has been arrested.
The incident occurred at 2 am on Wednesday. The woman had come to the hospital from a village on the outskirts of Chintamani for treatment and decided to stay there overnight as it got late.
The 25-year-old accused, identified as Irfan from Chintamani and works as a daily wager, came to the hospital to receive treatment.
Police stated that the Irfan raped the woman upon finding her alone. The woman was resting on the hospital premises. However, she was rescued by some people in the hospital, who rushed to the scene after hearing her cries for help. They also caught hold of the accused and handed him over to the police.
“The woman had come to the hospital for treatment. She was on hospital premises. During this time, a person raped her. The accused has been arrested and sent to custody,” Chikkaballapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey said confirming the incident.
The Chikkaballapur Superintendent of Police informed that the crime happened on the campus and not inside the hospital. The woman is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
A case has been registered under Section 64 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (rape), Chouksey said.
The incident comes amid nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor inside Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital.
