Allahabad HC stays demolition of Ambedkar Stadium
Government has been asked to reinstate those who vacated the stadium.

Lucknow: The Allahabad High Court has stayed Uttar Pradesh government's decision to demolish Gomti Nagar stadium in Lucknow till July 19. UP Chief Minister Mayawati had given just four hours to the families of stadium officials to vacate on Monday evening.

UP government has also been asked to reinstate those who have vacated the stadium. The government will file a counter affidavit in three days. The HC stayed the move on a petition filed by one of the stadium officials.

The BSP-led government plans to knock down some parts of the stadium to expand the nearby Ambedkar Memorial Park which is Mayawati's pet project.

The government claims it has plans to build a bigger stadium at Agra to replace the Gomti Nagar stadium.

There are also unconfirmed reports that there are plans to build a literary centre in Mayawati's mentor Kanshi Ram's name.

Interestingly, it was Mayawati herself who inaugurated the multi-crore stadium in 1994 and named it Dr BR Ambedkar Stadium.

The stadium has sports infrastructure worth Rs 20 crores including six tennis courts, two badminton courts, swimming pools and gymnasium.
