Alert neighbours help nab robber gang

Timely intervention by alert neighbours helped police nab a gang of three just as they were trying to flee, following an unsuccessful attempt to rob an elderly couple at a house in Saravanampatti on Friday.

A few local residents managed to note down the registration number of a two-wheeler used by the thieves and passed it on to police, eventually leading to their arrest. The gang, identified as K Elango (31), M Ranganathan (26) and Ajay (27), barged into a house at Saravanampatti and gagged the 67-year-old occupant at knife-point, police said.

“Pretending to be enquiring about houses available for rent in the area, the accused stepped into the house. Thereafter, they gagged the elderly woman with a tape and forced her to remove a gold chain she was wearing by brandishing a knife,” a police official said.

Meanwhile, Kamala’s husband Rajendran (75), who was in a toilet located in the rear side of the house, returned and was shocked to see three persons threatening his wife at knife-point.

Rajendran soon raised an alarm, prompting some neighbours to rush to their aid. Sensing trouble, the gang jumped on their motorcycle, pushed down some of the neighbours who tried to stop them, and sped away.

Some of them even tried to chase the gang on their own two-wheelers, but the trio managed to escape.

“However, the public noted down their vehicle number and informed us. This made it possible for us to nab the culprits during a vehicle check near Anjugam Nagar,” a police officer said. A subsequent inquiry revealed that the gang, all first-time offenders, targeted the elderly women after they realised that she was usually alone at home during the day. “They had monitored her house for at least a week and came to strike on Thursday.’’
