Akhilesh announces financial relief for encephalitis' victims
A financial relief of Rs one lakh would be given to those who had developed mental or physical disablity due to the viral infection, he said.

Gorakhpur: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each to the next of kin of those who had died due to encephalitis in this eastern region of the state. A financial relief of Rs one lakh would be given to those who had developed mental or physical disablity due to the viral infection, he said.

Fifty per cent of the amount would be paid in cash while the rest would be deposited in the account of the concerned person to enable him or her to utilise it in future, Akhilesh said. The government was also considering waiving loans of small and marginal farmers, he said adding "a policy in this regard will be announced soon."

The Chief Minister was speaking at the inauguration of the golden jubilee celebrations of Madan Mohan Malviya Engineering College here. He said the government was considering a proposal to give university status to the college. Akhilesh said the institution would be developed into a centre of excellence on the pattern of IIT Roorkee.
