CHENNAI: A Kochi-bound Air India flight landed back at Chennai airport amid full emergency preparations after an engine of the aircraft overheated after take-off, on Monday. The pilot decided to return to Chennai about one hour after taking off. As the temperature levels of one of the engines on the port side began to rise, pilots of AI 520 apparently asked the Air Traffic Control to prepare for a full emergency landing. According to airport sources, the plane had departed from Chennai airport around 10.20 am and had begun its course towards Kochi when the pilot reported an oil leakage, following which security personnel were alerted for an emergency landing. The pilot wasn’t willing to risk flying the distance without the services of one of the plane’s engines and decided to return to Chennai, they said. After taking precautionary measures, the flight with 106 passengers on board landed safely at 11.10 AM, sources said. After the passengers were safely offloaded, they were accommodated in the next flight to Kochi that departed in the afternoon, an Air India official said. Despite the plane landing amid full emergency preparations, the AI official maintained that it could not be termed as an emergency landing. “The technical snag was a minor issue... investigations have begun to find and rectify the problem,” the official said.
