ERODE: The government has approved a pension (feeding allowance) of Rs45 a day for retired police sniffer dog Tiger after it ended 10 years of service recently in September.Previously, after a dog puts in eight years of service, the government would auction it off. But after it was reported that the dogs were not well-maintained by the new owners, the previous DMK government decided to maintain them in the dog squad itself by allotting pension for them, the dog squad cops told Express.Tiger,an expert in detecting crime cases, got an extension of two years of service as even after completing eight years in service it showed no sign of ageing. The dog retired from service in September and since then, it was being maintained in the same squad without any work.While, as per the present rule the feeding allowance — money allotted to buy rice, meat, vegetables and milk for the dogs — was hiked from `54 to `85 per day. However, the pension for a retired dog is `45 only as they would not eat much due to age factor. The normal life expectancy of dog is 12 years. In the wing, another dog — Diana — retired, but it was auctioned. However, within a year it died. Hence, maintenance of Tiger, a German Shepherd, with same affection by its trainer would improve its longevity. On DutyThe other dogs in the squad are: Rocky (Doberman), Wicky (Labrador) and Thamarai (German Shepherd). The first two are experts in crime detection and the third is explosives expert. The first two attended nearly 40 cases last year and Thamarai is used only for VIP bandobust duty so far. Thamarai, a new arrival, started work after six mo-nths training at Coimba-tore, when the CM visited Erode for local body poll campaign.It went to PM’s bandobust duty in Chennai a few days ago.
