PUDUCHERRY: While speculations are rife about a possible coming together of All India NR Congress and the Indian National Congress in the Union Territory, there seems to be no indication about it from New Delhi.All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Sonia Gandhi has directed the Puducherry unit of the party to live up to their role as a constructive Opposition and reach out to the people. Former chief minister and the current leader of Opposition V Vaithilngam, who called on Gandhi in New Delhi along with president of Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) A V Subramanian on Tuesday, said the AICC chief has given “full signal” to work as Opposition.The two leaders also met AICC General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad in New Delhi on Wednesday before returning. It is said Azad told the duo to work towards developing the party and emerge strong.Earlier, they had apprised Gandhi that the the party’s vote bank had increased by 75 per cent in the Indira Nagar by-election when compared to the Assembly election which was a setback to the ruling AINRC. The party votes have gone up by 4,000, while the AINRC’s votes declined by half from 16,800 to 8,000. ‘AKD’ V Arumugham, who contested unsuccessfully in Indira Nagar by-poll, was projected to Gandhi as the ‘brave soldier’.Azad was also informed about how AINRC was losing ground on account of cases against minister and MLA PML Kalayanasundaram, who had to quit as education minister after he was booked in an examination fraud case, while MLA Kathikeyan was booked in a case of road rage. Besides there have been several setbacks for the AINRC government, which include sub-standard rice distribution through PDS and non-implementation of schemes.Vaithilingam said that they had met their leader and enquired about her health and well-being.
