Abduction-murder accused killed in Coimbatore
Mohanraj was an accused in the abduction cum murder case of two school children.

Coimbatore: A key accused in the kidnap and murder of two school children in Coimbatore recently was shot dead in an alleged encounter on the city outskirts on Tuesday morning.

Police said Mohanraj, the accused, was being taken to nearby Pollachi for interrogation in a van when he suddenly snatched a revolver of an escort policeman and fired one round at him. However, another escort opened fired killing Mohanraj on the spot.

The escorts were also injured and have been admitted to a government hospital in Coimbatore.

Van driver Mohanraj had abducted 11-year-old Muskin and her seven-year-old brother Ritik Jain while taking them to the school a fortnight ago.

The girl was allegedly raped by Mohanraj and his friend Manoharan. Both the children were later murdered and their bodies dumped in a canal near Pollachi.

The incident had sent shock waves across the state and rotten eggs were thrown on the accused by the public when they were produced before court soon after their arrest.
