PIRAVOM: The members of the Piravom Boat Club are gearing up to conquer the waters of Punnamada lake.They are practising hard to win the Nehru Trophy Boat Race to be flagged off on Saturday.They bagged the first and second prizes for the past two years in ‘iruttukuthy’. This time the club is venturing into ‘Aanari puthen chundan’ in ‘Chundan Vallam’ category.“The club bagged the first prize ‘iruttukuthy’ in 2009 in. Last year we contested in ‘Padakkuthira’ and bagged the second prize. The victory in ‘iruttukuthy’ has helped boost our confidence and spurred us to try a hand at ‘chundan vallam’,” said club captain Babu Attunnedathu.A total of 107 members, including 91 rowers, five ‘amaramkkar’, seven ‘nilakkar’ and two ‘iddikkar’, will partipate in the chundan. The rowers are from Kalamboor, Mulakulam and Udayamperoor. The chundan is owned by the Aanari kara(village) in Edathawa. Nearly 800 families of Aanari own the chundan. They constructed the chundan 10 years ago and renovated it this year afte which the it was renamed ‘Aanari puthen chundan’. The club rented the chundan for Rs 1 lakh.The members of the club are practising nearly four hour in the Piravom River every day. Thecurrent of the river is high and it will help to win the contest, Babu said.
