PMK founder S Ramadoss has blamed successive State governments for failing to take his advice to conduct a caste census. This refusal to heed his advice, Ramadoss said, had put the 69 per cent reservation in Tamil Nadu in peril.
Referring to the recent order by the Supreme Court to the Tamil Nadu government to create 19 per cent more seats in medical courses exclusively for general category students, Ramadoss said it was not just an order that came in favour of students of dominant communities, but that it was more relevant to see it as a sword hanging over the 69 per cent reservation that has been in place in Tamil Nadu since 1989.
“Ever since the SC passed its judgement in the Mandal Commission case in 1992, that reservation must not exceed 69 per cent, this has been under threat. I have time and again said the only way to save it is to conduct a caste census and prove the rationale behind it,” said Ramadoss in a statement on Tuesday.
He faulted the State government for accepting and acting on the recommendation of Backward Classes Commissioner Justice Janardhanan, and asked it to take necessary action to protect 69 per cent reservation.
