At least 25 people were injured, six of them seriously, when a gas tanker lorry exploded at Chala bypass along the Kannur-Koothuparamba road, nearly 5 km from Kannur town, around 11.30 pm on Monday.
The injured have been admitted to various hospitals, including Pariyaram Medical College.
According to unconfirmed reports, the lorry overturned after hitting a divider and exploded, causing major fire spreading over houses and shops in the area.
Several houses, shops and vehicles were gutted.
Fire force personnel from Thalassery, Kannur and Kozhikode rushed to the spot and efforts are on to contain the fire and people are being evacuated from the area.
The exact reason for the f i re i s not known. The lorry was completely gutted. The details about the lorry are yet to be known.
