BHUBANESWAR: The State Congress has decided to strengthen the party at the grassroots by starting organisational activities from booth committees. The process to infuse life into the organisation from the lowest level was started from the zonal meeting of the OPCC held in Cuttack on Sunday. Former Union minister and Odisha in-charge Jagdish Tytler and senior leaders were present. The zonal meeting was attended by leaders from seven organisational districts __ Cuttack City, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Dhenkanal and Angul. Presidents of the Block Congress Committees (BCCs), MLAs, MPs, former MLAs, former MPs and senior leaders of the party from these districts were invited to the meeting, OPCC vice-president Gurupada Nanda said. Sources said the block presidents were asked to identify at least three active Congress leaders from each of the booths under them. This will have to be completed in the next 10 days. The booth committee leaders will be the key for the revival of the party in the State. This is a new approach, going to be adopted by the party, to strengthen it at the booth-level and upwards. The second zonal meeting will be held in Berhampur on Monday for leaders of four districts __ Ganjam, Gajapati, Boudh and Kandhamal. The State has been divided into six zones where such meetings will be held. Tytler, secretary of the AICC Vinay Sorake, OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik and other senior leaders will attend all the six zonal meetings. The zonal meetings are being held with an eye on the 2014 elections. The Congress is in the Opposition in the State since 2000 as the BJD has won three consecutive elections. Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, who addressed the party leaders and workers at the Congress Bhavan on Saturday, had underscored the need for unity in the party. The 2014 election should be taken most seriously and all leaders and workers should be ready for a do-or-die battle, he had said.
