Mumbai: Zaibunnisa Kazi, an accused in the 1993 Bombay blast case, on Monday surrendered in a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (TADA) court in Mumbai. Her daughter last week had filed an application to seek an extension on medical grounds.
The 74-year-old has maintained that she has done nothing wrong, and has demanded a re-investigation into her role in the case. "I am innocent. I plead the government to give me pardon. I have several health problems. I can't even walk. How will I stay in jail?" Zaibunnisa said.
The Supreme Court had earlier granted four weeks time to Zaibunnisa to surrender in the court to serve the remaining sentence. Zaibunnissa had in April submitted a petition in the apex court saying that she should not be forced to surrender and serve the remaining part of the sentence till the President decides on her clemency plea. But the Supreme Court rejected the plea.
Zaibunnisa had mentioned in her petition that she was being treated for kidney cancer and her condition was so bad that she not only required constant medical attention but also needed an attendant. She had said that she would not be able to survive in jail. She had said that a petition under Article 72 has been filed on her behalf before the President, seeking pardon of her punishment.
Zaibunissa's sentence of five years by the Bombay High court was upheld by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had said that all convicts should surrender within four weeks of its upholding the Bombay High Court judgement. Zaibunisa was charged for possessing illegal arms and ammunition and also under the stringent TADA Act.
