An 18-year-old girl has allegedly committed suicide at the state orphanage at Cooperganj in Kanpur where she was brought five years back.

Meenakshi, an orphan, was found hanging in the restroom of the orphanage in Talwa Mandi in Cooperganj in Kanpur on Tuesday, a police spokesman said, adding that she had left a suicide note in which she has not named anyone responsible for her act.

Meenakshi was brought to the orphanage on February 26, 2009, and had been staying in Kanpur ever since.

Sources said she was upset over the fact that she had turned 18 and was to be sent to a women's home, against her wish.

In her suicide note, Meenakshi has held friends and close ones dear to her, but did not blame anyone for her act, the spokesman said.

District Magistrate, Roshan Jacob has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, and police was questioning other girls and staff of the orphanage, he said.
