Baghdad: A series of at least 16 heavy explosions resounded through central Baghdad just before sunrise on Monday.
The explosions were apparently the reports of large mortar rounds. There were no immediate reports of where the barrage of shells landed or if their were casualties.
Meanwhile on Sunday in Tikrit, demonstrators protested the execution of the country's former leader Saddam Hussein and in the near by town of Awja, mourners paid their final respects to the former dictator.
Saddam was buried early on Sunday on the grounds of a mosque in Awja, where he was born.
About 100 people attended the burial ceremony, including the governor of Sala-heddin province, where Tikrit lies.
The graves of Hussein's two sons, who were killed by US forces in 2003, are nearby.
Hussein was hanged early on Saturday for crimes against humanity.
