14-day Walk for Climate Justice begins

CHIKMAGALUR: Environment conservationist Krishnamurthy Pushpanath flagged off  ‘Walk for Climate Justice’ organised jointly by the Karnataka Growers’ Federation and Central Social Market atop Bababuden Giri here on Friday.The walkathon will cover 191 km distance in 14 days. Krishnamurthy, who drew the attention of the world by walking 550 km in 23 days from Oxford to Copenhagen in 2009, said that efforts by the coffee growers to conserve environment by raising thousands of trees in their plantations was unique at a time when rising number of industrial zones are polluting the atmosphere by emitting smoke.He said it was a small attempt by the growers to preserve the bio-diversity perpetuated by their ancestors from generation to generation. But, the civil society’s return to the plantation owners was comparably negligible, he regretted.DCF Venkatesh stressed the need for conserving environment in Malnad, which is known for bounteous nature’s wealth.
