134 schools to be upgraded

The Vellore Corporation Education Committee has identified 134 schools from the newly added areas to be upgraded as Corporation schools.

There were only 10 schools in the old corporation area with one high school and nine higher secondary schools. With 17 new areas added, the Corporation now had a total of 134 schools, including 72 panchayat union primary schools, 36 middle schools, eight high schools and 18 higher secondary schools.

The Corporation’s Education Committee president and Ward 41 councillor, K Suriya Achari, said, “The Corporation has allotted `1.76 crore for the schools.”

He said the committee had divided its activities in educational development, infrastructure development, cultural development and developing good thoughts and attitude among the students.

“Soon, letter of inclusion of the identified schools would be submitted to the Chief Education Officer Pon Kumar and the schools would come under the Corporation in a month’s time,” Suriya Achari said.

The first initiative, was to provide drinking water and to install water purifiers. The committee had also passed resolutions to provide good playgrounds, generators, toilet facilities, compound walls and other amenities to the schools, he added.
