Indore: At least 10 people were killed and three seriously injured when a four-storey building, which also houses a hotel, collapsed near Indore’s Sarvate Bus Stand late on Saturday.
Taking cognisance of the matter, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Sunday announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for each of the injured.
Seven people were rescued from the debris as locals joined the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in relief operations.
The building, MS Hotel, is situated in Chhoti Gwaltoli area, close to Sarvate Bus Stand and reportedly housed 25 rooms. A commercial hub of Indore, the area is close to the bus stop as well as the railway station and is crowded in the evenings.
Onlookers claimed that a speeding car had hit the building and brought down the dilapidated structure.
Police had to use mild force to disperse the huge crowd which gathered on the spot after the building came down.
Following the incident, Chouhan expressed his condolence on Twitter. "We are monitoring the rescue effort. I pray that everyone survives and those wounded recover soon," he said.
