How to Hide Mirrored Closed Doors
How to Hide Mirrored Closed Doors
Mirrored closet doors were at one time all the rage, but fads come and go and now they’re not so desirable. If you’re looking to update the outdated in your home both affordably and effectively you have options. By applying a simple facelift you can achieve the look of new doors at a fraction of the cost.
Steps

Covering with Fabric Panels

Install a curtain rod or drapery track above the doors. Position the track 4-6 inches from the ceiling and have it extend beyond the width of the doors at both ends by as much as 12 inches. The curtain will hang in front of the mirrored doors allowing you to continue to use the mirrors if you wish.

Measure for your panels. Measure the full width of the doors and multiply by 1.5-2 so the panels will fall in pleats when they are drawn closed. Divide the total width by 2 for the finished width of each panel. Measure the finished length from the track to the floor. This is the size of each panel. If you purchase curtain panels this is your minimum size.

Choose a decorator fabric panel or curtain panel. A complementary fabric that will work with the existing look and feel of the room is best. Oftentimes the simpler the design the better the overall finished look. A sheer curtain will still allow for the light effects of the mirrors.

Applying Wallpaper or Window Film

Measure the mirrored surface area. Find the area of each panel by multiplying its length by its width then add them all together for the total surface area to be covered. This tells you how much covering you will need to buy. Wallpaper and window films will have a coverage estimate on their packaging. Your total surface area is your minimum requirement.

Choose a wallpaper or window film to complement the decor. Wallpapers can be as simple or ornate as you wish. Window films can be a basic light filtering opaque treatment or made to look like stained glass; they are available at most home improvement stores.

Clean the mirrors with glass cleaner. In order to get good adherence and a smooth finish the mirrors need to be spotless. Clean the mirrors first with a good quality glass cleaner using a microfiber cloth. Follow up with a dry coffee filter for a spotless shine.

Attach according to product instructions. Products may be self adhesive, use wallpaper paste, or adhere with water alone. Follow the product instructions carefully.

Affixing Vinyl Decals or Collage Items

Gather an assortment of images to attach. Select wall decals, attractive papers, card stocks, and photos, to get the design you’ve settled on. Consider a thematic, colour, or design scheme for the room when making your choices.

Plan the arrangement of your items. Lay out all of your selections on the floor or a large table. Move them around, and even discard some if necessary, until you have a layout you like and that will fit on the mirrors.

Clean the mirrors. Wipe the mirrors first with a good quality glass cleaner using a microfiber cloth. Follow up with a dry coffee filter for a spotless shine. The decals will have better adherence and the overall finish will be improved by this preparation.

Use double sided tape or another removable adhesive to fasten the items to the mirrors. Some decals are self-adhesive. Be careful with your first placement to avoid re-attaching items multiple times. A removable adhesive will allow you to redecorate in the future if you wish to.
