How to Clean a Mirror Without Windex
While Windex is a common cleaning go-to for many households, you might be looking for cleaning solution that isn’t as harsh on your mirrors. Although you can find natural glass cleaning products at some stores, you can easily make effective cleaning solutions from the comfort of your own home. For a quick clean, use a vinegar mixture to freshen up your mirror. If you have a lot of visible gunk and grime on your glass, try using a rubbing alcohol solution instead. With a few wipes, you can successfully clean your mirror without any harsh chemicals!
Steps

Creating a Vinegar Solution

Combine equal amounts of white vinegar and distilled water. Pour 1 cup (240 mL) of distilled water into a large spray bottle. Next, add in 1 cup (240 mL) of white vinegar to the water. After securing the lid on the spray bottle, shake the mixture vigorously so both ingredients can mix together. Always use equal parts vinegar and water when making a glass cleaning solution. Distilled water is a good option for households with hard water. If your home doesn’t have hard water, feel free to use the tap instead.Tip: If you’d prefer not to use vinegar in your cleaning mixture, you can stir a few drops of dish soap into a spray bottle of warm water.

Spritz the vinegar solution onto a microfiber cloth. Spray your homemade cleaning solution 2-3 times on the material, or until the cloth is lightly soaked with the vinegar mixture. If you’re cleaning a smaller mirror, only use 1-2 squirts of the vinegar solution to clean your mirror. Although it might seem logical to directly spray the mirror, you can actually cause more streaks this way.

Rub down the mirror in a zig-zag motion. Take your soaked cloth and reach up to the top left hand corner of the mirror. Move the cleaning cloth from 1 end of the mirror to the other, working in a horizontal line as you go. Continue downwards in a diagonal line, reaching the left edge of the mirror. Keep alternating with horizontal and diagonal strokes, cleaning the mirror in a downwards zig-zag until you reach the bottom edge. Work in quick, rapid motions as you wipe down the mirror.

Wipe away any marks with a clean microfiber cloth. Take a dry, unused cleaning cloth and buff away any obvious streaks or marks leftover from the vinegar solution. While the mirror will dry on its own, you can prevent any future marks or smudges by rubbing down different problem areas of the mirror. The best way to prevent streaks is to make sure the mirror is as dry as possible after you clean it.

Using Rubbing Alcohol

Mix water, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and essential oil together in a spritzing bottle. Pour 2 cups (470 mL) of water, ½ cup (120 mL) of white or apple cider vinegar, and ¼ cup (59 mL) of 70% concentrated rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle. Shake the container vigorously to combine all of these ingredients together. If you’d like your cleaning mixture to smell more pleasant, try adding 1-2 drops of essential oil to your solution. Citrus essential oils smell great when used in cleaning solutions. It won’t make a difference if you use one type of vinegar over another.

Spray the mixture onto an unused cloth or paper towel. Spritz your rubbing alcohol mixture onto a microfiber cloth, rag, or paper towel. Only use 2-3 squirts of the solution, so the surface of the cleaning cloth is soaked but not dripping wet. Avoid spraying your mixture directly onto any mirrors, as this can leave streaks and marks. Microfiber cloths are best to use on glass due their soft material, but paper towels and other soft cloths can also work well.

Rub down spots that have a lot of gunk and grime built up. Before wiping down the entire mirror, look for small portions of glass that are coated in grime, toothpaste, or some other hardened substance. Scrub over these areas with your cleaning cloth, working to remove any visible gunk and markings from the mirror ahead of time. Rubbing alcohol cleaning mixtures are more useful when it comes to battling tough messes.Tip: Save yourself some cleaning hassle by getting rid of smears and other gunk right away! Whenever you see a fingerprint or other smudge on your mirror, soak a cotton ball or pad with rubbing alcohol and lightly rub it over the smudged surface.

Scrub the entire surface of the mirror with zig-zag motions. Start at the top left hand corner of the mirror, wiping in a horizontal line until you reach the rightmost corner. Work downwards in a diagonal line, wiping the glass until you reach the left edge again. Keep wiping the mirror in a zig-zag motion, working in horizontal and angled motions until you wipe off all the glass.
