Director Greta Gerwig’s Barbie took the theatres by storm upon its release on July 21. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead, the comedy fantasy drama ticked off all the right boxes at the ticket window, winning the hearts of the masses, especially the female audience. With the film’s immense popularity, there have been speculations of a spin-off, but this time with Ken as the lead. But it seems like a solo Ken spin-off is a distant thought for now. In a recent interview, Barbie’s co-writers — Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach subtly dismissed the idea of a possible film in the making revolving around Ken.
In an interaction with 60 Minutes, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach revealed that they are yet to think about a solo movie, featuring Ken. When 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi asked the co-writers whether a “Ken Movie” was possible, the writer duo gave a cryptic answer. “We can’t comment on that,” said Baumbach to which Gerwig added, “I can’t comment on that. I mean the truth is … I guess we’ll see.”
In the same interaction, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach spilled the beans that they were brimming with a “wealth of ideas” to create a “Ken effect” in the Barbie film. But unfortunately, all of that could not be included in the final draft. Elaborating on the same, the writer duo said that they had a particular scene in mind where Ryan Gosling’s Ken apparently plays himself. Claiming that they had enough “material” to establish Ken in the real world as shown in the film, Gerwig said, “We would write, and write, and write”. Interrupting her Baumbach advised her not to give too much information away.
According to reports, Margot Robbie might not reprise her role as a Stereotypical Barbie if there happens to be a sequel. But chances are that she might join the film’s crew as a producer, reports Comicbook. While Mattel has already expressed its desire for a Barbie sequel or spin-off, Greta Gerwig revealed that she has “zero” ideas for the same. “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got… I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero,” she said.
The movie revolves around different types of Barbies who live in the fantastical Barbieland along with Kens where everything is happy and worry-free. But when Margot Robbie lands in a crisis, she ventures into the real world to find herself.
