Are the Nangloi-Najafgarh Road to Sector 24 Dwarka or Delhi-Haryana Border to Kherki Daula routes part of your daily commute? If yes, then starting today your commute might get a lot easier with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate parts of the much-awaited Urban Extension Road-II and the Dwarka Expressway.
The 19-km-long Haryana section of the eight-lane Dwarka Expressway will connect Delhi-Haryana Border to Kherki Daula while the 10-km-long six-lane Urban Extension Road-II will connect Nangloi-Najafgarh Road to Sector 24 Dwarka.
These two projects are a critical part of the decongestion plan for Delhi, the pet project of Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Dwarka Expressway
News18 had reported in January that the Dwarka Expressway is expected to be ready by March. Developed at a cost of around Rs 9,000 crore, the Dwarka Expressway was initially scheduled to be completed by April 2024, but got delayed.
The expressway was planned as an alternate road link between Delhi and Gurgaon to ease the traffic flow on the existing Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.
The new 30-km expressway will start from Shiv Murti in Delhi and terminate at Kherki Dhaula on NH-8 in Gurugram, completely bypassing the existing congestion on the highway. It is the first phase or the northern part of the Gurugram Ring Road.
Only two packages of the 19-km stretch of the road – from the state border to the end in Haryana – will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on Monday.
Built at a cost of around Rs 4,100 crore, one of the packages is a 10.2-km section between Delhi-Haryana border and Basai Rail-over-Bridge (RoB) and another is the 8.7-km-long Basai RoB to Kherki Daula.
The Dwarka Expressway is being built in five packages. The other three packages include 5.9-km stretch between Shiv Murti intersection near Mahipalpur till the Rail Under Bridge (RuB) near Dwarka Sector 21, the 4.2-km stretch between the RuB and Haryana border, and the 5-km road for airport connectivity from Dwarka through a tunnel.
The planning for the project dates back to 2006. Even though it is much delayed, the road will be India’s first eight-lane fully access-controlled urban expressway with a six-lane service road.
UER-2
UER-2, also termed as the third ring road of Delhi, will on completion connect National Highway 1, 2, 8 and 10 passing through Dwarka, Najafgarh and Rohini. In total, it is about 75-km long. It starts from NH-1 near Bankoli village and terminates close to the junction of Sector 24 in Dwarka.
The Prime Minister will inaugurate a 9.6-km section between Nangloi-Najafgarh Road and Sector 24 Dwarka.
As per the ministry, the road is being developed in five packages at a cost of Rs 7,716 crore and the first three packages of the project will serve as an additional western ring road in Delhi, offering an alternative route for traffic from west or south Delhi, IGI airport, and Gurugram, heading towards NH-44, Chandigarh, Punjab, as well as Jammu and Kashmir.
The road will also connect to the India International Convention and Expo Centre (IICC) in Dwarka, known as YashoBhoomi, and will improve traffic flow in Delhi. The construction had started in November 2021.
At least 20 lakh tons of plastic garbage sourced from the Ghazipur landfill is being utilised as part of the project.
