Manchester: Michael Owen has agreed a one year extension to his contract at Manchester United, the club has confirmed.
Speculation had been rife that Owen would leave Old Trafford this summer after a two year spell in which a lack of form and fitness severely restricted his first team appearances, but the 31-year-old has repeatedly stated his desire to remain at the club.
United have granted Owen his wish, and the former Liverpool frontman has revealed he is ecstatic to have earned a new deal.
"I'm delighted to have agreed a one-year extension to my contract," he told manutd.com.
"To play alongside so many great players, under an exceptional manager, and in front of so many incredibly passionate supporters, is a real inspiration. I can't wait for next season to start."
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson voiced his delight at agreeing the deal which will keep Owen at the club for another season, and has promised the striker will be given more of a chance to shine next term.
"Michael has proved to be a top footballer," he said. "It's unfortunate Michael didn't get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable.
"I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season."
