New DelhiL: Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was arrested in the wee hours on Monday morning and subsequently questioned by detectives over his alleged involvement in a Merseyside bar bust-up.
He has now been charged by the police, along with two other men, and will appear in court in January.
Still, the midfielder was back in training on Wednesday morning and has been given the blessing of boss Rafa Benitez.
The Spanish gaffer could have done without the set-back, having worked so hard to establish 'Pool as viable Premier League title contenders. Furthermore, he was recently sidelined by kidney stones and needed an operation.
Nevertheless, he's keen to make his feelings regarding his influential captain public, saying: "Steven is our captain and a key player for us. More than this, I know him as a nice person.
"I sat down with him this morning and had a very good talk with him about the situation and I was also able to speak at length with our club lawyer.
"Steven explained to me what had happened and I told him he has my full support and backing, along with everyone else at the football club.
"We'll do whatever we can to support Steven in the weeks ahead, but we're now concentrating on our preparation for the FA Cup game at Preston this weekend."
